Recreation: TREC Trails

TREC (Trails Recreation Effingham County) is an organization committed to bringing a county-wide public trail system to the community “to increase tourism, to improve the quality of life for residents and to serve as a tool for economic development.”

While the trails are still not fully completed, the master plan, created in 2005, consists of 30 miles of trail for public use, providing an alternative route for bikers, hikers and recreation enthusiasts throughout the area. TREC also sponsors several events throughout the year, including several 5Ks and other outdoor adventures.

Those interested in contributing to the trails’ expansions can join the Foot of the Trail program to build another 12 inches of trail for $50. Contributors will be recognized for their support and receive membership benefits, like trail updates and invitations to TREC events.

For a trail map, information about TREC’s history, donation opportunities and more, visit their website. Trail maps can also be picked up at the Effingham Visitors Center.
