Looking for something to do this weekend? The VW FunFest in Effingham is a great place to spend your time with events such as games, live music, great food and one-of-a-kind vehicles. If VW FunFest isn’t for you, the communities surrounding Effingham have plenty of other activities to keep you busy!
Sigel Sesquincentennial (June 1st and 2nd in Sigel, Illinois)
Abe and Mary Todd Lincoln impersonators, Max and Donna Daniels, will visit Sigel as part of its sesquicentennial celebration. Portraying the Lincolns since 1988, the couple has no trouble staying in character. The Lincolns will be touring Sigel and helping out in many of the events scheduled for the weekend. The town will kick off its celebration at noon with a World War II reenactment north of town. The reenactment will repeat at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Events held at the park include Civil War and Prairieland Frontiersmen encampments and a history museum. A historical tour of Sigel will leave St. Michael’s church parking lot at 2 p.m. Evening events include a Neoga/Teutopolis alumni bragging rights softball game at 7 p.m., followed by a trivia contest at the park and big band music at St. Michael’s Gym. The evening festivities will conclude with fireworks at dusk. Sunday morning will feature a veteran’s parade along Church Street beginning at 12:30 p.m. that will culminate in a memorial service held at the park. President Lincoln will deliver the Gettysburg Address as part of the service. All Sigel area veterans and currently serving members of the armed services are welcome to march in the parade. Please bring your lawn chairs to the memorial service. A civil war band will play on Sunday afternoon. Food will be served daily.
German Heritage Day (June 1st in Klitzing Heritage Park in Altamont, Illinois)
10 – 10:30 a.m. “Tales of the Black Forest” by the Altamont Public Library
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. A display telling about the German settlers, churches, etc.
10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Play old-fashioned games played by the German settlers’ children. Led by the Recreation and Parks Committee
11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Listen to recorded German music. Bratwurst, sauerkraut, wiener, soft drinks, and German desserts for sale
Noon – 2 p.m. Tour Dr. Charles M. Wright House Museum, adults $5, students $1. Home of the doctor to the German settlers, N. Main & W. Jackson
1 – 2 p.m. “Traveling the Prairie” at Ballard Nature Center, 5253 US Highway 40, The Center is open noon to 4 p.m.
Touch of Teutopolis Craft Fair (June 1st at the KC Hall Meeting Room in Teutopolis, Illinois)
The Touch of Teutopolis Craft Fair will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Teutopolis KC Hall Meeting Room. Items include handmade baby blankets, tag blankets, handmade tutus, essential oils, homemade cupcakes and cookies, hand-painted wooden signs, hand-made jewelry, homemade candles, hair bows, headbands and much more. Come and see what your local crafters have to offer!
Chicken Fry and Chicken Ball Tournament/Fun and Safety Day (June 2nd at Strasburg Park in Strasburg, Illinois)
A full day of food, fun and games for the entire family! All events will be held at the park on East Commercial Street. The Strasburg Lions Club will have concessions starting at 11:30 a.m. at the beginning of the Chicken (Kitten) Ball Tournament. At 4 p.m. there will be a chicken fry. Various activities throughout the day include Strasburg Fire House/truck tours, traveling smoke house tours, craft/coloring station, face painting, 4-H demonstrations and much more!
