You won’t want to miss out on this year’s Cars and Stars-themed Funfest for Air-Cooled VWs! Now in its seventeenth year, Funfest will host a number of events and activities, both familiar and new to Funfest-goers. But you don’t need to own a VW to have fun here! Grounds at Mid America Motorworks will open to the public at 8 a.m. all weekend, and general parking is just $5 a day. Head to Funfest Headquarters when you arrive to pick up a goodie bag filled with a t-shirt, lapel pin and more.
Funfest will include installations and tune-ups, seminars, a bean bags tournament, exhaust wars, expert panels, Celebrity Choice Awards and more. Check out the Yager Family VW Collection on display in the Fun Dome, try your skills with low speed slalom races with three tries at only $5 or see the latest VW fashions up close at the second annual Funfest Fashion Show. Kids are invited to visit the Family Zone to enter a coloring contest or decorate their own VW for a drive-in style experience.
Attendees will also have the chance to meet some special guests that are celebrities of the VW world. Filmmaker Damon Ristau will be showing a sneak preview of this latest work, “The Bug Movie,” which follows the journey of the Volkswagen Beetle throughout the years and its place in pop culture. Bruce Meyers, creator of the off-road racing record-setting Meyers Manx Dune Buggy, will be back to Funfest for his third year, leading seminars and panel discussions. Automotive author John “Gunner” Gunnell will also be attending to work on his latest project for Motorbooks: an all-encompasing volume showcasing the iconic Volkswagen.
Start off your Funfest experience the right way, and join the Fun Run at 4:30 tomorrow evening with hundreds of other VWs as they parade to the Downtown Party known as Welcome Fest. From 5 to 8 p.m., enjoy live music by local artist Russ Howard, dance performances by Jansen’s Dance Center and Effingham County Courthouse Museum tours. Herbie from “Herbie Fully Loaded” will be on display, and the first round of Celebrity Choice Awards will take place. Don’t forget to pick up some great food, like Gabby Goat, Aunt Kim’s Kettle Corn, Tropical Sno and Culver’s frozen custard. You’ll also have the chance to receive some awesome giveaways and register to win a Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Speaker!
We can’t forget the first EffingHAM Music Fest of the year! Saturday evening, starting at 5 p.m., enjoy a country buffet dinner and a live performance by Garrett Biggs and the Highway 40 Band on the Funfest Stage. Doors to the Funfest Amphitheater will open at 7:30 p.m., and country star Drew Baldridge will take the stage at 8 p.m. Tickets for the concert are only $10!
Stop by the Effingham Convention and Visitors Bureau booth anytime to pick up some great giveaways and take your free souvenir photo that will be ready in just minutes! While you’re there, don’t forget to grab an Effingham pig to participate in a photo contest hosted by Mid America Motorworks. They are putting a spin on our “Have Pig, Will Travel” contest and invite Funfest-goers to decorate or dress up their pig to match their own or their club’s personality. Take photos with the pig at Funfest all weekend, and post them to Mid America Motorwork’s social media pages with the hashtag #funfestpig. The winner, which will be announced Sunday, will receive free standard registration for next year’s VW Funfest.
With so much going on throughout the weekend, the 2015 Funfest for Air-Cooled VW is sure to be a hit. For more information on this event, visit http://www.funfestacvw.com. We’ll see you there!
