Recreation: TREC Trails

TREC (Trails Recreation Effingham County) is an organization committed to bringing a county-wide public trail system to the community “to increase tourism, to improve the quality of life for residents and to serve as a tool for economic development.”

While the trails are still not fully completed, the master plan, created in 2005, consists of 30 miles of trail for public use, providing an alternative route for bikers, hikers and recreation enthusiasts throughout the area. TREC also sponsors several events throughout the year, including several 5Ks and other outdoor adventures.

Those interested in contributing to the trails’ expansions can join the Foot of the Trail program to build another 12 inches of trail for $50. Contributors will be recognized for their support and receive membership benefits, like trail updates and invitations to TREC events.

For a trail map, information about TREC’s history, donation opportunities and more, visit their website. Trail maps can also be picked up at the Effingham Visitors Center.

Recreation: Lake Sara

This month’s blog series will highlight some of Effingham’s most cherished spots for recreation, and where’s a better place to start than Lake Sara?

Lake Sara offers several fun activities for the community, like fishing, swimming, boating and more. Enjoy a picnic under the pavilions, or take the kids to the playground overlooking the lake on the east end.

Camping is available within walking distance of the lake at Lake Sara Campground and Anthony Acres Resort–both very close to the beach! Across from Anthony Acres is Cardinal Golf Course, an 18-hole course that borders the lake, making for a scenic and exciting golf outing. Just minutes away is Fore-Way Challenge Golf, a 9-hole public course with a driving range, putting green and clubhouse.

For those looking to spend some time on the water, visit Larson’s Landing or Bluegill Marina for all your lake-day needs, including pontoon boat rentals, kayak and tube rentals, fuel, food and drinks, bait and tackle and more.

After a long day at the lake, relax and have a nice meal! Larson’s Landing is joined with a new bar and grill called Pinky’s where you can enjoy a scenic view of the lake during dinner and drinks on the large patio area. Bluegill Marina is also joined with their own restaurant, Zona’s on the Lake. Zona’s is another full-service restaurant that promises good times and good food.

For questions about Lake Sara, call 217-868-2787. Don’t miss out on all the great activities Lake Sara has to offer this summer!
